SHORT PROFILE

The general aim of the division is to make Teachers of public schools under the FCT Education Secretariat efficient and motivated in order to be able to face the challenges in the dynamic classroom situations for effective learners’ performance.

     
  • To ensure quality teaching through adequate re-training, orientation courses and workshops.
  •  
  • To identify teaching standards that articulate what teachers should know and be able to do at different point in their career.
  •  
  • To ensure a state of the art setting with mentors where all the facilities are in place to enable teachers emulate good practices i.e. give teachers opportunities to undertake supervised teaching sessions
  •  
  • To collaborate with Donor Agencies/Education Agencies such as UNESCO, ETF, synergy Corporations, JICA etc, in the provision of technical expertise for teachers’  capacity building.
  •  
  • To liaise with Educational Inspectors in the monitoring of teachers’ activities with the aim of improving their areas of weaknesses.
  •  
  • To sensitize teachers on new trends in educational practices.

The functions of the Division include: -

     
  • Provision of the basic teaching tips that can easily be implemented in the classroom.
  •  
  • Provision of on-line study services for teachers.
  •  
  • Creation of a forum for experienced teachers to share their expertise with colleagues through symposia, workshops and seminars.
  •  
  • Researching into teaching techniques and learning styles and publication of same for teachers use.

The TDD is to provide the above stated services to public school teachers of the FCDA at Pre-primary, Primary, Junior Secondary, Senior Secondary and Instructors of the Non-Formal Education.

Presently, there are three units each headed by a Coordinator in the headquarters: -
i. Science and Mathematics unit
ii. Language, Arts and Social Sciences Unit
iii. Research and Support Services.

• It is expected that with time other units such as: training and mentoring unit and teacher incentive unit will be established.
• All the services above are similarly expected to be carried out at the branch offices across the whole FCT.

 

 

DETAILS OF CUSTOMERS

The customers for our services include: -
  All public school teachers in the FCT,  they include: -

     
  • Pre – school teachers
  •  
  • Primary school teachers
  •  
  • Junior Secondary school teachers
  •  
  • Senior Secondary school teachers
  •  
  • Non-formal instructors of learning centres
  •  
  • School Supervisors and inspectors
  •  
  • Teacher mentors (experience retired teachers)
  •  
  • Proprietors of private schools

RIGHTS OF CUSTOMERS

     
  • Every teacher has the right to demand for further training every three years
  •  
  • Private schools proprietors could demand for module of training of teachers or request for similar training for their teachers. This is on the premise that their learners are also children of the FCT residence.
  •  
  • Supervisors and Inspectors of FCT schools have the right to demand for the organization of training for teachers in those areas they feel would need enlightenment as a result of their monitoring

TIME FRAME FOR SERVICE DELIVERY

     
  • Training of teachers through: -
    •  
    • Workshops,  Seminars and Conferences during vocations, weekends, week days ranging from one day to two weeks
    •  

     

  • Upgrading of teachers to higher qualifications through colleges of Education, faculties of Education or Institutes of Education ranging from 1 year (PGDE), 2 or 3 years (NCE), 4 or 5 years (B. Ed, B.sc Ed, M..Ed, PhD).
  •  

  • Research into training and incentive needs of teachers (4 to 6 weeks) in every end of academic session.
